Earliest known ancestor: James Driscoll b.~1812, Ireland.
Why my surname should be Driscoll rather than Paul !
My paternal great-grandfather came to New Zealand from Poplar, Middlesex, England in 1873 with his wife and daughter. The passenger list recorded them as Florance and Mary Ann PAUL, daughter Elizabeth. I had previously found the 1867 civil registration for the marriage of Florance and Mary Ann. It took place in the Poplar (Church of England) parish church. In both these cases Florance’s surname was given as Paul and his occupation as Mariner or Seaman with father James.
Mary Ann was easy to track in the UK but years of looking for Florance in census records or birth/baptism records produced nothing.
Then I found that Florance used DRISCOLL as his middle name when he registered a NZ born child who died young. Repeating my UK work assuming he was really Florance Driscoll quickly produced results.
The UK birth registration of daughter Elizabeth Driscoll and birth and death of son James Driscoll were found. The family were found in the 1871 census at 72 Tilley Street, Bromley.
The 1851 finds Florance at 125 White Hart Place, Poplar with :
- James Driscoll, Head, Married, 39, Labourer, born Ireland.
- Jane Driscoll, Wife, Married, 41, , born Ireland.
- Florance Driscoll, u.m., 16, ditto (ie Labourer), born Poplar.
- John Driscoll, u.m., 14, , born Poplar
- James Driscoll, u.m., 12, , born Poplar
Florance was born before civil registration of births in England but he was baptised at the Poplar Roman Catholic Chapel of Saint Mary and Saint Joseph. There the registration tells us that he was born 8 Jan 1835, baptised 18 Jan 1835, parents James and Jane (nee Paul) Driscoll. God parents Richard Paul and Mary Driscoll. Note that the Latin entry states father’s name as Jacobi and mother’s name as Joanna. General accepted translations are James and ‘almost certainly’ Jane.
