Earliest known ancestor: John William Driscoll, b. 5 August 1841, County Cork, Ireland, d. 6 August 1912, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The basis for the identification of Mary Shannon as John William Driscoll's mother is a Manitoba marriage certificate for John William Driscoll's second marriage in which Mary Shannon is named as his mother. There has always been a degree of mystery concerning her identity and origins. An elderly relative says she was from Dublin, but that does not appear to be based on anything other than family lore. There are two short bio entries for John William in the History of Manitoba and the Story of Manitoba that refer to him being educated in London. The Story of Manitoba entry says that his father died when he was "quite young" and thereafter went to London with his mother.
Another part of the mystery concerns religion. John William Driscoll was a Protestant from at least his late 20s, marrying in the Church of England in Ontario in 1868 and then serving as an elder in the Presbyterian church in Kincardine, where my grandfather was born in 1878. Many of the Shannons in Cork appear to have been members of the Church of Ireland.
