Example: Early SNPs and marker mutations
Long-time project members may recall the diagram on the left from October 2017 (since modified to blot out FTDNA kit numbers).
This was an attempt to plot the mutation order of slow mutation rate STR markers.
At one time the project thought that I-P37 Driscolls might be split along DYF406S1, which is more medium-rate, into two subgroups.
Those with the value 12 were color-coded yellow and those who were 13 were color-coded teal. In light of evidence that the slow-mutating markers gave us, that model was discarded. Also put aside for now is the idea that DYS575 (#84) was a significant slow marker for Driscolls and a possible indicator of the older SNPs. One I-A13665 member carries 11. All remaining project Driscolls exhibit 10, including a new I-A13665 member who remains private. The left shows an update. Nodes are now Y SNPs and their approximate TMRCA dates.
Y STR mutations mapped out in 2017 are still there, alongside the SNP skeleton. They might coincide with the occurrence of these SNPs.
Then again, they may not. The vast majority of I-P37 Driscolls carry 16 on DYF395S1a (#40). But two more 15's pop up, one downstream of I-A14359, the other with an unresolved SNP.
So the use of DYF395S1a as a signal of the earlier SNPs is a mistake. Or ... maybe the behavior of the marker changed over time and it back-mutated.

Example: I-BY37208 around Bantry, Kilcrohane, and Goleen
The diagram on the left is also from October 2017 and was a first attempt to plot the mutation rates of project Driscolls with ancestry from Bantry, Kilcrohane, and Goleen.
These Driscolls are STR matches and share some mutations that stand out.
The left shows an update. Since 2017, the project has confirmed these Driscolls are under I-A14359, the formation of which was at least 1000 years ago. We don't yet know the age of the subclade I-BY37208.
So far, the mutation on DYS520 is coincident with everyone under this subclade. They carry 19. All other project Driscolls carry 20. Those with Goleen ancestry appear to share a mutation on DYS447. They carry 25.
A mutation on slow marker DYS436 sets our Bantry member apart from others in this grouping. A slow mutation rate doesn't mean a mutation had to have occurred many centuries ago.
