From the Southern Star, November 27, 1926, page 4:
We very deeply regret to have to announce the death of the late Mr. Alexander O'Driscoll who passed away in Cork on Wednesday at a patriarchal age.
A native of Oldcourt the deceased spent his younger days in Skibbereen. He subsequently embarked on the butter business in Cork, and later became the popular representative of the Cork Distilleries, a position he filled for many years with credit to himself and advantage to his employers; and after many years of faithful service, he retired on a pension. The late Mr. O'Driscoll belonged to a great old West Cork clan.
Over six feet in height, handsome, a fine specimen of physical manhood, the deceased was a man of commanding distinguished appearance, winning manners, and engaging address. He looked every inch the Irish chieftain, and often reminded the writer of Carew's description of Florence McCarthy More, standing, like Sa_d, head and shoulders about his fellows. He was brimful of reminiscences and local fore, and was a most entertaining racconteur. He was well-known in the commercial life of South Munster; and "big Sandy" knew and was known by everybody in large portions of Cork and Kerry. He had an undying affection for Skibbereen and often spent his holidays there. The writer accompanied him on many a walking tour during which every nook and corner of the country was explored, and whereever he went, he was known and respected. He was, in truth, a splendid type of Irishman, and we hope that he is now enjoying the reward of a well-spent life. May he rest in peace!
