R-DF21 has been found distributed through the British Isles. It has been found in ancient remains in the northern part of Ireland (the island) and is the parent haplogroup of Clan Colla. It is believed to have arrived from the continent. Qualifying project members willing to financially commit to doing the necessary levels of testing should join the R-DF21 and R-Z16526 (formerly R-P314) haplogroup projects.

Ancient peoples from the northeast of Ireland had blood relationships with those in southwestern Ireland. This haplogroup is for now an outlier to the Driscolls at large.

The last time this page was published, it was thought our Driscolls fell under Z16533. In 2020, that view has shifted. The calendar shows the change. Much of this haplogroup under Z16526 remains confusing. The relevance of the SNP P314 is probably diminishing, and will probably disappear from this calendar in time.

We aren't certain yet of the geographic origin of the paternal line ancestors of either of these Driscolls. For 61784119, there are difficulties reading records that could say Kilbolane or Kilbonane. Kilbolane is up by the Limerick border. It is tempting to think the origin is instead Kilbonane, because it is in the Bandon district and in reasonably close proximity to the geographic origins of the ancestor of 25895551 (Kinsale). Genealogy records for the latter show an ancestral family living around Belgooly, Kinsale.

On the map below, the blue dot in the upper middle marks the approximate location of Kilbonane. Further down and to the right is another blue dot marking the approximate locations of Ballady and Ringrone near Kinsale. The distance apart is roughly 20 miles.

The SNP branch of our Driscolls bears a relationship to the Munster Haplotype. Out of the Munster haplotype came the MacCarthy Mor of Muskerry and Duhallow, who were rulers of Munster and eventually prevailed over other clans, including Driscolls. There is a large time gap over the first millennium (and subsequently a knowledge gap) that covers the period over which the MacCarthy Mor (and many other known Cork clans) emerged. Sibling branches like our Driscolls bear watching.

Project members who fall in this haplogroup and done advanced Y SNP testing should also consider enrolling in Munster Irish. They are in private project Cluster 4820.

An old modal haplotype for R-P314 has been borrowed from Little Scottish Cluster (LSC), and our two matching Driscolls who fall under this haplogroup are the second and third records. The LSC-MODAL record is NOT a modal haplotype for these two Driscolls. It is a reference and marked to show its differences from the Driscoll records.

Our two Driscolls share numerous mutations from LSC-MODAL and only differ on DYS459b (#15), DYS460 (#26), CDYb (#35), DYS710 (#68), and DYS715 (#98).
