R-P312 is the granddaddy of several well-known R1b European haplogroups. One of its children, R-Z290, is a parent to R-L21, which spawned many western European groups. A second child, R-U152, is linked with Central Europe Celts. R-DF27 is a third child of P312 and is notable for its presence near and in the Iberian peninsula.

Our Driscolls fall under R-SRY2627 (or R-M167), and are encouraged to join the R-SRY2627 Haplogroup project. Notice that the Nature article from August 2017 shows "ground zero" for M167 in the Pyrenees region, and a thin band over most of Ireland, excluding the Connaught region (west coast, around Galway).

Through a genealogical paper trail, persons in this group state descent from Dennis of Kinsale (b.c. 1660). However, a conflict exists with R-CTS3386 Driscolls who also state descent from the same man. Further testing of paternal line lineages from Dennis on down would be needed to resolve the conflict.

Driscolls falling into this group are outliers to the Driscolls at large who have tested and are in the project. Driscolls have not yet been found in Ireland carrying this haplogroup. SNP testers with these SNPs report ancestry from much of Europe. R-DF27 members fall under private project Cluster 4100.
